Get your writing noticed with...

Writing patterns that tidy your thinking and pull your reader down the page

Even if you write by the seat of your pants...you’ve struggled to resolve a structure for your writing...your stories have looked more like swiss cheese than a narrative…and your articles end up with as much life in them as a DMV construction project...

IF you’ve sat down to write recently, you know how helpful it is to have a mental map to get you to your final destination.

But sitting down to make an outline just doesn't fit the natural flow of writing. Logic is to creativity like oil is to vinegar.I know. I used to despise writing. As a math nerd that loves solving for X, writing was pretty aggravating. You want to write words that help, inspire, guide, and encourage. But how?

You know what good writing looks like because you have good taste.

You know you need some structure .to hold your creativity together And that it’s more effective than going where the wind takes you and hoping you make it there eventually

You know that a well-organized piece of writing supports readers by making it easy for them to follow. And, your only one stroke of a key away from letting the words flow from your mind and onto the page at a steady pace.

You think writer's block is fiction.

Honestly, once you get going it’s not that bad.You can kick your mind into gear.Freewrite for 10 minutes. Pick an object to write about....<Insert your favorite blank page hack here.>

But organizing your thoughts on the page, NOW that's soul-sucking.

Putting words on a blank page is not the biggest challenge.

Your biggest challenge is...

Putting words on a blank page in an order that makes sense to your reader.

Why stop?Start writing on a track that works by tracing great writing form until you learn good flow, then break the patterns, then you make your own! It's a proven path to mastery founded on the principles of ancient Japanese martial arts.

Math is the logic of certainty. Writing is the logic of flow.

👋 Hi! I'm Justin.

I'm the creator of "Get Writing. Be Heard." And for the last 10 years I’ve helped growing companies like Mailchimp take their software products to market using processes that work. You might be wondering what a guy like me is doing creating a book on writing.

I'm a formula nerd.

I'm constantly looking for patterns and formulas that work. And when I started writing product release notes for my teams, I ran into a roadblock.

Writing didn’t work like math for me.

I struggled to write clearly, quickly, and well. My thoughts were jumbled in my head. I would lose all coherence when I tried to write them down.

I realized my inner critic was starving for structure.

The critic stared me into submissive procrastination. Until I would drop my pen in defeat and resentment.

Then it hit me. I had been thinking about it wrong.

Logic did exist. There is a formula, but not the kind I was used to.

There is no right formula.

Writing is art. It's a unique expression of individuality and what we want to communicate. Formulas will just infuse forced inauthentic messages. Defaulting to a pattern of writing will lack originality.

BUT readers want familiar structure and flow

As humans we are unconsciously familiar with structure. That’s why it works. Without it, we’re thinking, “what the hell’s happening?” or “when’s this going to end?” Readers want structure. It helps them make sense of the world, and feel comfortable.

Since that discovery, I’ve been on a path to finding the writing patterns that flow.

I sought out the best writing resources, structures, and frameworks from across the internet that I could find. Filling anthologies of docs and bookmarks.

Through my work as a project leader, I discovered an idea rooted in principles of mastery found in ancient Japanese martial arts.It held the secret to unlocking my writing discipline. It had been there all along staring me in the face. And when I followed it, my writing flowed like never before.

This book is the product of the process I now use to skip the hard parts to get writing and be heard -- and you can use it too.
